What Does a Bonfire Have to Do with the Holiest Night of the Year?
Men from St. Mary Magdalene and St. Justin Martyr gathered in St. Justin’s “backyard” to explore the answer. Fr. Josh Cochrac was the featured speaker and led the group in a reflection on how fire has played a key role in salvation history—through the burning bush that spoke to Moses and the pillar of fire that guided God’s people out of Egypt toward the Promised Land.
For the evening’s prayer, the group prayed the Exsultet, the Easter Proclamation traditionally sung at the Easter Vigil after the procession with the Paschal candle. This powerful hymn proclaims Christ’s victory over sin and darkness—celebrating Jesus as the light that conquers the night.
After prayer, the men enjoyed hot dogs and s’mores around the fire—a treat not typically found at the Easter Vigil, but always welcome at a good bonfire.
